The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has banned these apps under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

There has been a lot of border tension between China and India lately due to which Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has banned more than 100 chinese linked apps yesterday. These apps were banned under the Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.

Why has the Government banned these apps?

The consumer chinese has been known to use consumer and enterprise technology companies for espionage. As a friend, China and their tech firms got the benefit of doubt so far. Now that China has shown its hand openly by attempting to seize Indian territory. The government is clear that it wants a Chinese-tech-mukt-Bharat (Chinese tech free India)

How many Chinese apps have been banned in India?

This month the government banned 118 apps including PUBG mobile. In June 59 apps were banned including Tiktok.  By this, anybody and their sister would know that India really is taking BIG steps to save itself from cyber spying. These steps have created a lot of problems in China as now they won't likely be able to steal data from the country.

Under which law the government announced the ban?

The ministry of Information Technology has invoked its power under  Section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the information technology (Procedure and Safeguard for blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009.

Data sharing norms under a Chinese law requires companies of chines origin to share data with that countries intelligence agencies, irrespective of where they operate.

PUBG was launched as a computer game by a South Korean company called BlueHole in 2017, the mobile version was published by a Chinese conglomerate, Tencent a year later.

The message is clear that India will safeguard  its digital security and ht China where it hurts-in the pocketbook. Chinese apps that are worth hundred of billions of dollors, have been counting on India as a lucrative market.

How popular were these banned Chinese apps in India?

for instance, sensor tower data released that earlier this year, reveals that India accounts for over 24% of the PUBG downloads. Also the daily active players of PUBG surpasses 20 million.

The former banned app Tiktok was also very popular. It had over 19 million downloads in India only. After Tiktok got banned, Helo gained over 10 million downoads.

Are there any good replacements for these?

PLENTY 

There are like hundreds of alternatives to all the big chinese apps. Even many big and known companies like microsoft and google have their own alternatives. There are many Indian apps like Inmobi, Sharechat etc.
